  • Needs assessment:
    1. What do the students need to be able to do?
    2. How well do they need to do it?
    3. Who knows this?
    4. How can you find out?
    5. What logistics and politics are involved?
  • Objective for this week: Starting to set up an ESP course/program (Go to Week 3 guest lecturer Comments)
    • Look at the student population
    • target situations
    • assess needs and outcomes
  • Participants:
    1. If you are doing workplace ESP, have you done a formal need assessment?
    2. How do you go about this?
    3. If you are doing academic ESP, have you collaborated with content-area colleagues in analyzing needs?
    4. What logistics and politics are involved, and how do you deal with them?
  • Optional activity:
    1. If you haven't done a needs assessment, contact a colleague or professional, or work with a student.
    2. Get permission to observe one activity that students will have to do, or read one assignment in a content area.
    3. Decide what students need to be able to do, and how well.
    4. Observe where students fall short, and write outcome statements based on this.
